DILYARA KAIPOVA

Biography

Dilyara Kaipova is an Uzbekistani textile artist whose work combines visual art techniques with fabric production and traditional textile craft, reviving centuries-old methods to explore socio-cultural and ecological issues in the region and its post-modern history. Kaipova graduated from Tashkent’s Republic Art College in the early 1990s, after which she worked in theatre as a scenographer, puppet designer, and maker, while also pursuing painting. From the mid-2010s, her practice has focused on fabric and textile as a central medium. In 2016, she presented the acclaimed project Kapitan Ikat at the International Exhibition of Contemporary Art in Tashkent: a collection of robes sewn from ikat fabrics she designed and produced in collaboration with weavers in Margilan. Her practice merges folk artisan techniques with contemporary design, often incorporating vintage Soviet-era fabrics and homemade embroideries.

Kaipova’s textiles have been exhibited internationally in Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Georgia, and the UAE, and are held in collections including the State Tbilisi Museum of Silk, the Textile Museum at Georgetown, RISD Museum of Art, Royal Ontario Museum, MAKK Museum, Stedelijk Museum, and the Johnson Museum of Art at Cornell University.
